developed

educational

7, 1887
Founded as the North Carolina College of Agriculture and
Mechanic Arts, NC State officially opened its doors for
classes in the fall of 1889 to a modest group of 72 students,
six faculty members and just one building.This humble
beginning was fueled by the idea that the benefits of
higher education shouldn't be exclusive to a select few.
Instead, the university's founders envisioned a place
where the children of farmers, mechanics and other
hardworking citizens could also access opportunities for
learning and advancement.
More than 130 years and a few name changes later,
NC State has held true to its land-grant roots, dedicating
decades to serving the citizens of North Carolina and opening
doors to countless individuals. Now boasting as the state's
largest public institution, with over 39,000 students, nearly
10,000 faculty and staff and more than 700 buildings, NC
State stands as a leading research enterprise that educates
more North Carolinians than any other university, fostering
